«They breathe, the celestials: the sanguineous surge in the belly of the sky» – Performative Screening with Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi, Jade Meili Barget, Andrew Yong Hoon Lee and Fabian Saul

Film screening November 29, 2025 04:00 pm – 05:30 pm

As part of the exhibition «This Is How the Light Remembers», Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi, Jade Meili Barget, Andrew Yong Hoon Lee and Fabian Saul explore the intersection of cinema, text, and sound through an assemblage of found footage. The performative screening traces our entanglements with elemental media such as the skies and their celestial bodies – carriers of information since time immemorial.

From here, the work opens outward to another set of trajectories: the ways images travel not only through atmospheric and planetary channels, but also through the circuits of conflict and memory. This screening-performance looks at how images move from the battlefield to the cinema, from military archives into our feeds, from collective memory into the private spaces of grief. It asks how pictures of violence repeat themselves – on screen, in news cycles, in dreams – and how we, as viewers, become part of that repetition.

Across three movements, we linger with images that wound, images that reveal, and images that refuse to be seen. We think about our screens as places where shared memory is built, and where the stories of – its distances, its disappearances – are rewritten again and again.

Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi is a Milky Way–based artist whose practice mutates in and out of film, sculpture, installation, performance, and interdisciplinary research. Collaborating with characters in search of consciousness, language, and freedom, she explores the aesthetic, political, and epistemological possibilities of image and sound. Her work has been presented internationally in both art and cinema contexts, including the Berlin Biennale, Belvedere 21 in Vienna, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, De Appel in Amsterdam, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt. In 2023, she was named among the 20 New Talents in Art in America and received several awards for Into The Violet Belly, including the Jury Grand Prix and the Golden Lola. She studied at the Städelschule and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently pursuing a PhD at the Centre for Research and Education in Art and Media at the University of Westminster.

Jade Meili Barget is a curator based between France and Norway. She is currently the Live Curator at Bergen Kunsthall and the 2025/26 Curator-in-Residence at the Museum of Art and History in Geneva. In 2024, she was co-curator and editor of the 15th Gwangju Biennale, and from 2021 to 2024, she was part of the curatorial team at transmediale festival in Berlin. Her work consistently explores how emerging technologies and shifting media landscapes choreograph social bodies.

He holds a BA from Simon Fraser University and an MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery School of the Arts. He is the editor-in-chief of Flaneur magazine and has created audio projects such as Schlechte Wörter, Stoff aus Luft, and Die Ästhetik des Widerstands – Variationen zu Peter Weiss (2025). Saul has directed theatre pieces including Zärtlichkeit (2022) and Die Schwerkraft der Gnade (2024).
