One key aspect of Korakrit Arunanondchai’s practice is artistic collaboration. With one of his most frequent collaborators, the performance artist Tosh Basco (formerly known as boychild), Arunanondchai has recurringly collaborated ever since their initial meeting in 2013. Basco has performed multiple times in Arunanondchai’s video series, often appearing as an otherworldly non-human character body-painted in green. Drawing upon Basco’s specific use of movement, dance, and improvisation, the artists together develop scripts for the performance parts in Arunanondchai’s videos. In their talk, Arunanondchai and Basco will not only delve into the exhibition’s Songs for dying / Songs for living conception and main themes but also look at their collaboration and its meaning in connection to notions of togetherness, ritual, and world-building.

Korakrit Arunanondchai lives and works in New York and Bangkok. The exhibition Songs for dying / Songs for living is realized in co-production with the Kunstverein in Hamburg and is on view in Hamburg from December 4, 2021. Recent solo exhibitions of the artist include: Kunsthall Trondheim (2021), Serralves Museum, Porto (2020), Secession, Vienna (2019) and Kasseler Kunstverein, Kassel (2018). Arunanondchai’s work has been presented at numerous biennials and festivals, with recent presentations at the Gwangju Biennial (2021), Yokohama Triennial (2020), the Venice Biennale (2019), and the Whitney Biennial (2019).

Tosh Basco is a performance artist whose practice employs improvisation as a mode of survival and world-building. Adamant about the visceral experience of live visual performance, her work shows how the movement of form communicates what remains impenetrable through images, and through language. Her performances have been presented in a variety of venues and frames - between museums, performance and dance houses, and nightclubs: Amongst them are Venice Biennale, the Sydney Biennial, the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, MOCA Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, ICA London, and Berghain. Tosh Basco has toured with Mykki Blanco and collaborated with Korakrit Arunanondchai, Wu Tsang, as well as the streetwear label Hood By Air. Tosh Basco is currently part of the company of Schauspielhaus Zurich.
