The Legacy of Accumulation – Colonial Critical Perspectives

Guided tours May 18, 2025 03:00 pm – 04:00 pm

Meeting Point: Entrance

Colonialism forms the historical foundation of many processes of accumulation — whether of land, resources, or knowledge. However, the impacts of these historical mechanisms are by no means concluded but extend into the present. In globalized capitalism, which is based on unequal relationships and the exploitation of resources, we see how colonial structures still influence the distribution of wealth and power today. In the exhibition «Accumulation – On Collecting, Growth and Excess» the question of what impact these colonial legacies have on our current society is raised.

On the occasion of International Museum Day on May 18, 2025, the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst is offering a colonial-critical tour of the exhibition. This tour goes beyond the art historical perspective and takes visitors on a critical engagement with the colonial entanglements of accumulation and their ongoing impacts in the present. The tour invites reflection and rethinking of the connections between colonialism, power, and global inequality in the context of the exhibited works.

The tour will be led by the media and cultural scientist Linda Addae (curatorial assistant), who is deeply engaged with colonial-critical themes. In her work, she has focused on postcolonial theories and their influence on the cultural and art world. Her analyses not only establish historical connections but also highlight current social and political structures shaped by colonial practices.
