What does it mean to give without expecting anything in return? Nicole L’Huillier’s exhibition explores what binds people together – in a world where so many aspects of life are shaped by a ‘quid pro quo’ approach and utility. The artist opens up spaces beyond these logics and allows visitors to experience other forms of coexistence.

How? Through play. Play, here, does not mean distraction or escapism, rather an attempt to practise communication and community – an invitation to connect with others. L’Huillier therefore transforms the ground floor into a site of play. There are sound installations, swings, whispering bowls and small objects with heartbeats. L’Huillier understands play as ‘listening and responding, entering a dynamic field of resonance in which we become porous and elastic, and give without expecting anything in return’.

L’Huillier encourages us to dance, sing and swing. For human development is shaped not only by rationality and competition, but equally by mutual acceptance, care and activities that have no specific goal – in other words, ‘love and play’. She sees her installations as spaces for experience, full of shapes, colours and sound, in which we can explore how we relate to one another, to other beings and atmospheres.
