K8 Hardy
Outfitumentary, 2016
In 2001 K8 Hardy moved to New York and decided to start creating a long-term record of her daily outfits on video. Over a ten-year period – until the camera broke – she documented these outfits. They became the basis for Outfitumentary, a diaristic self-portrait and, in the artist’s words, "a representation of the way a young radical lesbian feminist dressed in her time". Filmed in ever-changing living spaces and artist studios in New York, the film carries a distinctly lo-fi, collage-like quality, with clips spliced together and often shifting from one ambient soundtrack to the next, mirroring Hardy’s continual transformation through changing ensembles and hairstyles.
