Ragnar Kjartansson: To Music/An die Musik

Ragnar Kjartansson’s exhibition at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, his first solo show in Switzerland, is accompanied by a monograph about the artist (b. Reykjavík, Iceland, 1976; lives and works in Reykjavík). The publication presents an initial survey of works Kjartansson has created between 2001 and 2012 that relate to music. Musical performances—the present catalogue is the first to offer extensive documentation—have been a part, and indeed a central part, of Kjartansson’s creative output for over ten years. In his performances, which often extend over several weeks or months, Kjartansson not only explores his own physical and psychological limits in the tradition of early performance art, but also examines the artist’s status in general and the different images of his role.
