Art & Language

15.11. to 11.01. 2004

Art & Language was initially the name of a group of English artists who preferred to work collectively and anonymously, and the title of a magazine founded in 1968. Art & Language proposes a critical analysis of relations between art, society and politics. With the Linguistic Turn as its historical background, Art & Language combines artistic and discursive issues, calling into question many of the systemic assumptions of artistic theory and practice. Since 1976, the Art & Language project has been the work of Mel Ramsden and Michael Baldwin with the literary and theoretical collaboration of Charles Harrison. Working in a variety of media from painting to rock music, Ramsden and Baldwin, who were among the founders of Conceptual Art, are still concerned with many of the questions that remain unresolved as a consequence of “Modernism´s nervous breakdown”.
