In view of the worldwide rise of nationalism, populism and xenophobia, the artistic social studies of Koki Tanaka (b. Tochigi, Japan, 1975) focus on how we live together in societies. Realized especially for his exhibition in Zurich, the project Vulnerable Histories (A Road Movie) (2018) focuses on an example from Tanaka’s native country, the mutual incomprehension and mistrust between Zainichi Koreans and ethnic Japanese, to plead for vigilance when it comes to racism and discrimination. Guided by the artist, two protagonists who meet for the first time in Tokyo grapple with questions of (their own) cultural identity and how to take a stand against racist groups and their demeaning slogans. The films that grew out of the project illustrate that coexistence and mutual appreciation are possible if we talk to each other: private as well as public conversations are vital. The exhibition provides a framework for continuing this exchange with “live speakers” whom visitors are encouraged to approach; they will be available for the entire duration of the presentation. Events involving representatives of the art and academic worlds will foster further discussion in a variety of formats.
The new exhibition in our series Collection on Display presents the work Show a Leg (Raus aus den Federn) (2001) by Pipilotti Rist (b. Grabs, 1962). The expansive video installation jettisons the conventional perspective of the outside observer for an immersive experience: projected video sequences and cones of colorful light sweep over wide panels of curtain fabric to produce a constantly changing visual environment of overlapping and proliferating images. Enhanced by a hypnotic soundtrack, the dreamlike scenario blurs the boundaries between reality and the space of representation and collapses the distance between self and world.
