Since 1977, when Mierle Laderman Ukeles (*1939 in Denver, Colorado) became the official, unsalaried Artist-in-Residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation—a position she still holds—she has created art that deals with the unending contradiction and tension between freedom and necessity, endless maintenance and service work that “keeps the city alive,” “care as culture,” and urban waste flows. She is best-known for projects including Touch Sanitation Performance (1979/80), in which she traveled to all Sanitation districts all over NYC to face, shake hands with 8,500 sanitation workers and to say to each, “Thank you for keeping New York City alive”. Mierle Laderman Ukeles lives and works in New York City. Over the decades, her work has been presented in numerous exhibitions including the Basis voor Actuele Kunst, Utrecht (2018), the Queens Museum (2016), the Wilhelm Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen (2015), the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2014), the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus & Kunstbau, München (2014), the Grazer Kunstverein (2013), the Fundación Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona (2012), and the Kunsthall Oslo (2010).
