“Can You Meet Me Halfway?” – The museum as an experimental model of social action

Lectures and symposia October 30, 2018 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
In German, regular admission
The ZHdK context module with Marcel Bleuler (PhD) and Benjamin Egger will be held in Koki Tanaka’s exhibition from 11 am until 5 pm.

Following Koki Tanaka's exhibition Vulnerable Histories (A Road Movie), the seminar poses fundamental questions about exclusion and 'being different', and what role art can play in this regard. Can social divisions and differences be negotiated? And what does it take for communication, union and collective action to get off the ground? For this discussion, the exhibition is used as a space for reflection as well as social experience. The exchange with invited guests and visitors of the exhibition will take place within the framework of conversations or performative experiments. On the basis of these experiences, the students of the ZHdK will conduct experiments on the last day of the seminar, which are guided by the following question: Which artistic-communicative means can be used to form and test community?

Marcel Bleuler (PhD) works at the intersections between curatorial praxis and the scholarly study of art. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the Contemporary Art and Cultural Production division at the University of Salzburg, a co-director of the postgraduate program in Arts and International Cooperation at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), and an expert consultant for the Federal Art Committee (Swiss Art Awards). In March–October 2018, he is the programming curator of the anniversary project “I’ll be with you, whatever” of the Munich street magazine BISS (Bürger in sozialen Schwierigkeiten e.V.), with events in public settings in central Munich through October 13.

Benjamin Egger is an artist and works in Zurich. Since 2017, he has been a member of the DOGS research project, studying the coexistence between humans and dogs in various geographical contexts. Until 2017, he led the research project Inherent Crossing of the Institute for Contemporary Art Research at Zurich University of Arts (ZHdK), for which he collaborated with the Institute of Anthropology at the University of Zurich. He has had a series of teaching appointments at ZHdK, where he graduated from the master’s program in transdisciplinarity in 2014. He received a studio fellowship from the Binz 39 Foundation from 2009 until 2011, and studied fine arts in Zurich and at the Bezalel Academy for Arts and Design, Jerusalem, until 2008.
