Meeting point: Museum entrance, ground floor

Who looks after the artworks collected by the museum? How are the various materials preserved? What challenges does conservation present regarding sustainability and managing resources? In this tour, participants will learn more about the background of the works on display from Francisca Silva e Sousa, Head of Collection Care.

She will explain how important it is to give a close and detailed look into the artworks and what one discovers in the process. Another topic to explore regards the challenge posed by artworks that use technologies that make them vulnerable to obsolescence. And how does one deal with objects whose appearance changes faster than desired, due to ageing processes? Francisca Silva e Sousa will explore these questions and provide a deeper insight into preventative care, as well as highlighting cases that defy traditional conservation standards.

Francisca Silva e Sousa is a conservator specialising in modern materials and time-based media art. She is interested in conservation ethics and how contemporary art challenges the classical museological framework.
