About us

Mission Statement

The Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst has been discussing the pressing issues of our time, since it was established in 1996, inspired by the approaches and works of international contemporary artists. For us, contemporary art is a dynamic product of its time, facilitating a continuous exploration, from both forward-looking and backward-looking perspectives, of different cultural, historical and social contexts, as well as from a global perspective. We offer a forum for active, lively discussions about art in the context of social responsibility, thereby continuing to shoulder the commitment of Migros and its founder Gottlieb Duttweiler. Following in this tradition, we endeavour to reach an audience as diverse and wide as possible. Communicating and conveying information directed at different target groups, understanding their needs, and taking them seriously have been integral parts of our activities from the outset.

We keep a watchful and critical eye over important social discourse, while documenting and reflecting artistic responses in our exhibitions and collection. For us, art is not a self-contained reference system like a canon, but rather a participatory and transparent laboratory for developing and questioning approaches and opinions. This includes continuously reflecting on our own role as part of the world of contemporary art specifically. We are embedded in the arts scene in our home of Zurich and Switzerland, in a spirit of solidarity, while simultaneously participating in global networks. This not only shapes the work we do, but also influences how we deal with other people. Sustainability is a central element of our approach. All of this shapes not only our content-related work, but also our dealings with others.
