Festival on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the F+F School of Art and Design

The F+F School of Art and Design was founded in 1971 by a group of teachers* and students* who wanted a more experimental art education than the one they had known until then. Teaching at the F+F was characterized by an anti-authoritarian design pedagogy - the abolition of grading, a shift in roles from teachers as class leaders to facilitators, and a shift from frontal teaching to participatory processes. At school, methods such as teamwork and art as research, as well as formats such as happenings and actions, were strongly promoted. Instead of teaching the art-historical canon and art-technical craft, the F+F placed a focus on linking everyday life and art. Art, it argued, should be social, and connect to current sociopolitical issues. Play and embodied learning that went along with it were encouraged.

The guiding principles that led to the founding of F+F are a testimony to the pursuit of a Radical Education, as propagated by pioneers such as Ivan Illich, Paulo Freire and bell hooks, and still practiced today by numerous self-organized initiatives, many of them led by artists* - a pedagogy that, still hopeful, should herald a fundamental change towards a society equipped with critical tools.

On September 23 and 24, in collaboration with the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, a festival will be held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the F+F School of Art and Design, which takes up and develops the pedagogical principles around the theme of "Radical Education". It will invite artists who pursue experimental teaching in their practice; seek dialogue with self-organized groupings of students who critically consider their schools; and engage collectively-led organizations that facilitate inclusive, grassroots programs of study. Through workshops, reading groups, input and open brainstorming sessions, film screenings, walks, and other formats, the festival addresses self-organized spaces of action with creative activity and aims to reveal a network of cultural activists in solidarity who need and stand together for a different school. The focus of the festival is on collective understanding/learning, for example through play, and on play as an exercise in freedom of expression, transgression of norms and critical faculties.
