FRIENDSHIP AS UNPRODUCTIVE LABOUR
Venue: Exhibition
Under capitalism, stratified labour accelerates processes of disposability and death. This workshop explores how forms of slow or 'unproductive labour’, the labour of life-making, move against one of capitalism’s core logics: efficiency How can an embrace of unproductivity help resist the extraction of surplus value and help us understand where value is located? How can an exploration of the tenants of friendship and collaboration give us back to ability to labour fo one another? How can we imagine work beyond drudgery and obligation?
In this anti-work/shop, we’ll use collective reading and writing to identify precisely why unproductive labour is so valuable. Expect failure. All are welcome.
Bare Minimum is a queer interdisciplinary anti-work art collective: «We hate working, hustling, neoliberal self-improvement, wage labour and surplus value, private property, how work eats into our time, our love, and our ability to make things in earnest. We are group of friends who decided to formally name an existing structure of relation that keeps us alive through our labour for each other. We are lazy, queer and many of us are disabled. Our work has most recently been on show at Kunsthalle Wien’s 2023 exhibition ‘In the Meantime, Winter Comes Around’, as well as in screenings at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts (2023) and Somerset House (2023).»
