This presentation thematizes the violence in Mexico, going beyond the current “drug war” and its arenas, both geographically and temporally. This is because the social phenomenon of violence is simultaneously a historical phenomenon, which continues to shape everyday life in much of Latin America.

Alex Gertschen, born in 1979 in Bern, works as a journalist and researcher, specializing in Latin America. Holding a doctorate in history, he worked from 2007 to 2011 in Mexico City, as a correspondent for the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He lives with his family in Bern.
