With an introduction by Elsa Himmer

The focus of the second screening "New York Underground", which complements the Charles Atlas exhibition Scary, Scary, Community Fun, Death, is Atlas New York of the 1980s and 1990s. After leaving the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the mid-1980s, Atlas continued to film dance, but began to incorporate it into stories. His videos were created primarily outside the studio and focused on working with his circle of friends – for example Leigh Bowery, Anne Iobst and Lucy Sexton of DANCENOISE – thus also drawing a portrait of the New York underground. The protagonists of this work playfully deal with social conventions, especially in relation to sexuality and gender. The exuberant scenes show the joy of self-staging and liberated being beyond the everyday conventions in front of the backdrop of New York City.

The film program was curated by art historian Elsa Himmer.
