Joint Ventures. Artistic appropriations of art collections and exhibition history

Lectures and symposia September 4, 2019 10:00 am – 06:00 pm

Artist interventions in collections appear indispensable on today’s exhibition scene. Artists are invited to sift through objects hidden in storage, to explore different approaches or reflect on problematic aspects of a collection’s history. Museums offer the opportunity to exhibit, and in return artists’ interventions deliver new interpretations that keep the museum topical. Which concrete forms and practices of curating by artists are possible under these conditions, and what are the limitations arising from them? The conference aims to survey these joint ventures from a critical historical perspective to the present, taking into account new museological and curatorial approaches as well as questions of postcolonial, gender and media studies.
