Hoarding the Past: A Conversation with Ido Nahari and Akil Scafe-Smith

Artist’s Talk March 13, 2025 06:00 pm – 08:00 pm

Venue: Caring Space

While accumulation usually refers to the amassing of material goods, natural resources or capital, this intervention focuses on the past itself - as a form of ‘historical capital’.

The event questions how history(ies) are accumulated and expropriated, how past events legitimize some and render others invisible, and how the past is simplified so that it appears as absolute truth.

Akil Scafe-Smith and Ido Nahari will use current examples and their own practice to discuss how real and imagined historical objects or narratives drive political, cultural and economic interests.

Ido Nahari is a writer and researcher, currently pursuing his doctorate in sociology. Previously the editor for the street newspaper Arts of the Working Class, his writing has been published in various newspapers and magazines, and he has taught in the United States and Europe.

Akil Scafe-Smith is a director of RESOLVE Collective, an interdisciplinary design collective that combines architecture, engineering, technology, and art to address social challenges. They have delivered numerous projects, workshops, publications, and talks in the UK and across the world, all of which look toward realizing just and equitable visions of change in our built environment.
