«Common Mourning» – A Conversation on the Politics of Grief with Ido Nahari, Fabian Saul and Tasnim Baghdadi
As part of Fabian Saul’s exhibition «This Is How The Light Remembers» Common Mourning brings together Ido Nahari, Fabian Saul, and Tasnim Baghdadi for a conversation on the politics of grief. The discussion examines how mourning moves between the individual and the collective, tracing the emotional, social, and political dimensions of loss.
Rather than treating grief as a purely private matter, Common Mourning considers it as a shared and often contested terrain – one shaped by language, embodiment, and the structures of power that govern who or what is allowed to be mourned. The speakers reflect on the ways grief shapes memory, belonging, and resistance, and how different affective registers – from sadness to humor – can become part of mourning’s expression.
Through this exchange, grief emerges not only as a response to absence, but as a practice of connection: a means of acknowledging interdependence and of imagining forms of solidarity that extend beyond the boundaries of the self.
Ido Nahari (1994) is a writer and researcher who sometimes moonlights as an art critic. His work has been published in various newspapers and magazines, and he has lectured on anthropological and sociopolitical issues across Europe and the United States. He lives and works in Berlin and Trondheim.
Fabian Saul (1986) is a Berlin-based author, composer, and musician whose work explores memory, place, and the poetics of loss across literature, music, and art. He is the editor-in-chief of Flaneur magazine and has created audio projects such as Schlechte Wörter, Stoff aus Luft, and Die Ästhetik des Widerstands – Variationen zu Peter Weiss (2025). Saul has directed theatre pieces including Zärtlichkeit (2022) and Die Schwerkraft der Gnade (2024). His books include Die Trauer der Tangente (2024) and Boulevard Ring (2018), and his first exhibition, This Is How The Light Remembers, is presented at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (2025).
Tasnim Baghdadi (1988) is Co-Director of the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, where she oversees its programmes, shapes institutional strategy, and drives public engagement. As a curator, she creates exhibitions and fosters artistic production at the intersection of art and society, developing public programmes and projects that encourage dialogue and exchange. Since 2021, she has led the museum’s education and programmes. Previously, she worked as an art educator at Fondation Beyeler and Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017, among others. Baghdadi studied art history, curating, and design, and lives in Zurich, Berlin, and Fribourg.
