“Kulturagent.innen für kreative Schulen”—Art education in the museum and the classroom
“Kulturagent.innen für kreative Schulen” is a nationwide cultural education and school development project initiated and sponsored by Stiftung Mercator Schweiz in cooperation with the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Berne, Fribourg, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Valais, and Zurich. Verband Kulturvermittlung Schweiz, an association that operates throughout Switzerland, was brought in to implement the project. Launched in August 2018, it aims to awaken interest in the arts in children and teenagers and encourage them to become actively involved in the country’s cultural life. It also creates opportunities for schools and artists and creators to learn from each other. The “cultural agents” are embedded in the participating schools; many of them are artists in their own right and have a background in working with children and teenagers. They act as liaisons between schools, artists, and art institutions.
The Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst joined the effort as an institutional partner in 2019. In a pilot project, the museum’s art education team partnered with a teacher at the Schule im Widmer, Langnau a. A., to design an art education program in conjunction with the exhibition “Stephen Willats—Languages of Dissent” that was held at both the museum and the school between May and July.
Taking inspiration from the work of Stephen Willats, the students explored the possibilities of creative engagement and produced diverse pieces that reflect their own ideas and everyday lives. They discuss their experiences in an interview.
