Focus Tour: Algeria – Colonial Wounds and Their Legacy, with Asmaa Dehbi
Venue: In the exhibition
Mohamed Bourouissa’s exhibition ‘Pour Noubia’ tells the stories of people whose experiences often remain invisible within the dominant narratives of history, politics and media. Drawing on personal biographies, Bourouissa takes us from Blida in Algeria, through the Parisian banlieues, to Germany, opening up new perspectives on representation, belonging, memory and resistance.
This focus tour, led by educational scientist and racism researcher Asmaa Dehbi, explores the colonial and post-colonial dimensions of the exhibition in greater depth. Drawing on selected works and groups of works, the tour discusses the consequences of French colonial rule in Algeria, its lingering effects in the present day, and issues of representation, memory and social inequality. The focus will be on colonial violence and its effects on the body, the psyche and social structures, as well as on practices of resistance, self-representation and feminist perspectives.
The tour invites visitors to approach Bourouissa's works as a multi-layered exploration of coloniality, migration and societal belonging. The focus is on those stories and experiences that are all too often marginalised – and which, precisely because of this, open up new perspectives on the past and the present.
Asmaa Dehbi is an educational scientist and PhD candidate at the Swiss Centre for Islam and Society at the University of Fribourg. Her research focuses on social work in a society of migration and anti-Muslim racism, with a particular focus on the experiences of people perceived as female, young people, and refugees from the Maghreb states. In 2025, she co-authored the first baseline study on anti-Muslim racism in Switzerland.
