Location: Museum, ground floor

Who looks after the artworks in the collection? How are the different materials conserved and what are the challenges? In this guided tour, participants will learn about the background of the collection works on display with Francisca Silva e Sousa, Head of Collection Care. She will provide a deeper insight into some procedures in preventive care, the handling and transporting of artworks and address issues that defy traditional conservation standards.

The role of conservation is, by definition, to allow a work of art to exist in a specific state for as long as possible. But what state should that be? Artists have always explored material alterations – through traditional or experimental perspectives – and used them as carriers of meaning, metaphors, and other intentions to create objects. However, what if the materials change unintentionally, and this comes as a surprise even for the artist?

Francisca Silva e Sousa is a conservator specialized in modern materials and time-based media art. Her main interest lays within conservation ethics and how contemporary art challenges classical museological frameworks.
