Botanical Walk – An Exploration of the Vegetation around the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst
Nature is all around us. So there’s no need to get out of the city and head for the mountains or woods. On the contrary, we encounter nature every day — along streets and rivers like the Limmat, on the way to the supermarket, or when we're out for a stroll. Taking inspiration from selected works in the Potential Worlds 1: Planetary Memories exhibition, we head out to take a closer look at various forms of natural life in the city, raising our awareness and expanding our understanding of the surroundings we pass by on a daily basis. Experts in the natural sciences share their knowledge and help us see urban nature with fresh eyes.
Steffen Kuhn, a naturopath who specializes in herbal medicine, takes us on a botanical voyage of discovery at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst. Under his guidance, we discover the diversity of the vegetation that grows in the museum’s immediate vicinity: medicinal plants, regional plants and others that have come to Switzerland from afar. The tour is inspired by Maria Thereza Alves’ work Seeds of Change - A Botany of Colonization, which is on display in our current exhibition. Alves delves into the history of the seeds and plants that seafarers inadvertently carried across the globe to New York, where they helped shape the urban landscape. In addition to texts and drawings, her collection at the gallery includes living plants which Kuhn continues to care for on a regular basis. Just like Alves, we too are studying the plants that help create our everyday surroundings, in order to learn more about their distinctive features and history.
